How Do I Take Kratom? A Brief Guide

If it’s your first time taking kratom, you may be unsure about which method to use. Whether you’re using the popular White Vein kratom or another strain, it will likely come in either powder or capsules. In this article, we’ll provide some tips to help you find the best way to take kratom. But first, let’s look at the pros and cons of kratom powder and kratom capsules.

Capsules are easy for most people to take. It’s easy to get the dosage right and you won’t really be able to taste the kratom. However, when you take kratom in capsule form, it takes longer to work. Capsules also tend to cost more than powder. Meanwhile, kratom powder acts faster but it can be hard to measure the dose accurately. The strong taste can also be too much for some people, although there are ways to minimize the flavor.

What’s the Best Way to Take Kratom Capsules?

If you decide that capsules are best for you, you should probably start with a mild dose and then work your way up if necessary. Each of our capsules contains half a gram of kratom and the amount you take will depend on the effect you want to achieve. Since the effects will depend on your body weight, tolerance, and other unique factors. The below doses are merely suggestions.

  • Relief of discomfort – 7 to 8 capsules

How to Take Kratom Powder

One of the fastest ways to get kratom into your body is to use the powder. You can simply measure out the desired amount and toss it down your throat as quickly as possible. Follow this up immediately with water or another liquid. Some people don’t find this very palatable and they opt to make a drink instead.

How to Drink Kratom

If you like hot beverages, you can use kratom as a tea. Put the powder in a coffee filter and steep it in just-below boiling water for about 10 to 15 minutes for a pleasant, long-lasting effect. You can also add kratom powder to juice or smoothies to mask the flavor. Try starting with a mild dose of kratom powder, which is half a teaspoon or less. One to one-and-a-half teaspoons is considered moderate.

Taking Kratom and Food

Many people who are new to kratom find that they get the best experience when they take it with food. Using kratom on an empty stomach can lead to nausea, so it’s best to have either a snack or a full meal.

Keep in mind, eating food then taking kratom will help with nausea- but it might also cause the effects of kratom to feel a bit weaker. For the strongest effects possible, take kratom on an empty stomach. But be aware this might cause an upset stomach, especially to someone newer to kratom.

I toss n wash but only get the effect sometimes?

    • Jasmin Weber says:

      Hi Sheila,
What kind of information would you like us to send you? We have a lot of answers about our company & kratom in general located in our FAQ section, but would be happy to send you other information if you’d like to tell us your questions!
Toss n wash is definitely an effective way of taking kratom, it’s definitely odd that you only feel the effects sometimes- perhaps try upping your typical dosage by a gram or two?

My husband and I are new to kratom and have been taking it a couple days and haven’t felt any difference. We have the powder and are taking one teaspoon doses at a time and even went up to two tablespoons at a time and still nothing. What should we do differently? Also, what kind should I use for an energy and focus effect? I don’t like to be tired lol. Thank you

    • Jasmin Weber says:

A teaspoon of kratom is around 3 grams, while a tablespoon is around 9 grams. A dose of 3 grams may be too small for a noticeable effect, but I’m very surprised to hear that you felt nothing after two tablespoons- that’s a pretty hefty dose. Acidic juices like lemon juice and orange juice help make the alkaloids in kratom more easily absorbed for stronger effects, so I’d suggest trying to take your kratom with a glass of OJ or mixing it in there. For energy & focus we definitely recommend white vein kratom, like White Thai, White Sumatra, or our BOOST blend. Definitely no red veins, as those are typically the most relaxing!

      • Isylvia says:

Your kratom is not fresh. My first wasn’t, went and resupplied. What I bought in sealed pkg was SO much better. Almost took to much but mind over matter!,

        • Jasmin Weber says:

Hi there, I’m sorry to hear you weren’t satisfied with the quality of kratom you received from us- but I can assure you our product is fresh. We import kratom directly from a farm in Indonesia that we’ve been working with for several years, and the fresh kratom is either put into capsules or bagged directly in our Austin facility, where we also ship everything out to our customers. We have strict policies on lots so that they do not remain on shelves for too long.

    • Eric says:

It says take it with food but that’s always been a waste for me

      • Jasmin Weber says:

that’s totally fair, for some people eating & taking kratom really dulls the effects. We’ve just heard of experiences where customers taking kratom on an empty stomach experience nausea, so we air on the side of caution! But perhaps a light snack would be the way to go!

Try taking 1.5 to 2 teaspoons on a near empty stomach and as little fluid you can to toss it down. Approximately a few ounces or so. If you’re not feeling elated after 15 mins I would scrutinize your supplier or you need to break down the powder with grapefruit juice in place of the toss water. Adjusting these items can make a difference for some.

  • Maggie Hawkinson says:

I’m new to kratom. I have been taking green thai powder, about 2 tsp. each dose. I just got green malay capsules but prefer to just toss and wash. Is it safe to open the capsule and just take the powder? Thanks!

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Hi there! Typically, kratom capsules should contain the same powder you would toss and wash with. Our kratom capsules contain the exact same ingredients as our powder, so they would be perfectly safe to crack open! This is probably true of most kratom companies, but we can’t say for sure.

  • Tony D. says:

i bought kratom capsules and started with 6 and felt nothing then 10 and i felt very relaxed. ive been taking Red Borneo, i dont know much about it but i heard red is more relaxing, white for focus, and green for energy? is that true? i just ordered some powder and im not worried how to take it but how much to take. i dont know how much is in a capsule so i dont know how to convert it. please let me know a semi strong dose would be. Thanks

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Hi there! Great questions- first off, yes typically Red is relaxing, Green is for improved mood & positivity, and white is for energy & focus. We can’t speak to other manufacturers, but if you’ve been taking our kratom capsules they have .5g in each one. That means your 10 cap dose would equal 5g of powder! If you’re not sure how much kratom is in your capsules, we’d recommend starting with 5-6g of powder & working up from there if you don’t feel strong enough effects. Do be aware, though, our most recent batch of kratom is reportedly extra strong- so it might not hurt to start w/ even less just to be on the safe side (2-3g)!

  • DAN says:

How long between doses. Like say pills from a doc directions every 4-6 hours. Also is it safe to drink alcohol? I’m using these to detox pain meds but bedtime is still rough with anxiousness I wanted to do a shot or two so I can drift off but dont want to create a toxic mix with Kratom capsules

    • Jasmin Weber says:

First of all we need to say that we aren’t doctors & this isn’t medical advice, just the best information we have on this topic. We’d wait around 5 hours between kratom doses, especially if they’re big doses. Typically, we might take kratom 2 times per day, once in the morning and once in the later afternoon/evening. Science doesn’t have a lot to say about mixing kratom & alcohol. From what we’ve heard anecdotally, mixing them in small amounts may be safe- but please be aware kratom’s effects are different for everyone, and we would not recommend it.

    • Angel says:

Did this product help with withdrawals from pain meds? I’m very interested in taking them!

  • Ben L Lofgren says:

Hi, I’ve been taking Red Bali for quite some time for leg pain that I get from a company in AZ. From what I see here the red is for relaxing and nothing is said about what is best to treat pain. Can you clarify for me? I am told that Kratom works on the Opioid sensors in the brain similarly to Oxy. Which Kratom do you feel is best to reduce/eliminate pain?

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Hey there, we don’t make mention of kratom’s effects on pain on our website because it is against FDA regulations. Because this product isn’t considered medicine and we aren’t doctors, we don’t make any medical claims as to our products. That being said, many of our customers & folks like you find that kratom is very helpful for pain & discomfort, red veins especially so. On each of our product pages we have symbols up to show the effects that strain has, the ‘cross’ symbol is meant to represent the strain is effective for discomfort. Some of our most popular strains that have this symbol are Red Maeng Da, Red Bali, and Red Indo. We hope this helps!

  • Larry says:

Hey I am taking Kratom for about 2 weeks now and stopped taking opioids. I am taking 2 capsules 3 or 4 times a day and that seems to be working good for me. Does that seems like it’s alright to do?

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Hi there Larry, we are not medical professionals so we can’t make recommendations on prescription medication or whether to stop them. We’re very glad to hear that kratom is working well for you! As far as the dosage you’re taking, 2 of our capsules at a time is a fairly small amount, but if that’s working for you that’s great- at such a low dose, taking it 3-4 times a day is probably fine. If you’re using our capsules, that would be a total of 3-4 grams of kratom a day, which is well within normal amounts.

  • tina wiedmann says:

I just recieved a sample. It doesnt say.white green or red. It does say
Emerald kratom. So is that green?
It also came with no instructions.
So how much do I start with, so that i notice the affect.
    Thank u for your help
    Mitragyna speciosa

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Hmm, there are two possibilities here- either it’s a green vein that’s called emerald, or it is a brand named emerald kratom. This is probably not a sample from us, as we don’t carry a strain called emerald kratom, so it’s a bit hard for us to give a dosage recommendation. Our caps hold .5g of kratom each, so taking between 4-8 at a time is a good beginner dose (2g-4g kratom). However, it’s possible that the caps you have hold 1 gram of kratom, in which case you’d want to take a bit less. Starting with 4 capsules would be a good middle ground! (if you take kratom and don’t feel the effects after about an hour, you can take 1-2 more caps to boost it up a bit!)

  • Leslie W. says:

Hi, I’m new to kratom and I was wondering what strain you would recommend for a euphoric, talkative and increased sex drive effect? 😁

  • sq says:

    Aloha from Maui!
I’ve been taking Green MD for about 9 months, daily. It’s weird because some days I feel the great effects and others I hardly feel anything, all from the same batch. Do I need to up my dosage (typically about a tablespoon) or does taking it daily build tolerance? Whats your opinion?
    Mahalo

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Aloha! It is definitely possible that you’re building a tolerance to that strain, usually if you take the same strain every day you eventually do build a tolerance. I’d recommend keeping the same dose but getting one or two extra strains to switch between, I think you would get better results that way! I’d recommend Green Malaysian or Super Green, they’re both similar to Green Maeng Da but the different alkaloid content should help with tolerance!

  • Trisha says:

Hi I want to relax around 4 pm but don’t want to be up all night. Last time I took red Borneo I was up all night. I am new to this so I my took 1 gram. What should I take to feel relaxed and go to bed around 10pm

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Typically, we would expect a red vein to be more relaxing- however, sometimes taking small doses like 1 gram of red vein can cause it to be more energizing & uplifting. If using red borneo we’d recommend taking at least 3 grams to feel the relaxed/sedated effects, or trying our blend called RELAX, which is formulated to be slightly sedating. Again, try to take at least 3 grams to ensure getting the desired effects.

  • Vince says:

I have a huge problem with the way things taste, especially those that are plant-derived and have no special flavoring to them. On the safe side, I ordered my kratom in capsule form, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. They go down smooth, and they don’t have any aftertaste.

  • George says:

I read your article before I tried my kratom, and I am glad I did. I almost took it on an empty stomach, but I made sure to eat first when I found out it could cause nausea and discomfort. Thanks to your article, I have had a great time with kratom.

  • CM says:

Hi I’m trying to get off Heroin but quitting cold turkey isn’t good. I don’t want to be on methadone or anything. So I bought a red vein and was wondering if thats a good one to take through my bad detoxing day.

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Hi there, because we aren’t medical professionals & our products aren’t FDA-approved medicine, we can’t make any claims about our products like that. We do truly wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!

  • Georgie says:

Thankful for your dosing guides in this article. I am never sure what is an appropriate dose, so I like being reassured that I’m not overdoing it. I love your tea, and I drink it every morning! For anyone worried about taste, I pair mine with lemon to tone down the strong plant-like aftertaste.

  • Daniel says:

One of the best (and fastest) methods I have found is taking the kratom like an energy shot. I mix it with a little bit of water to create a drinkable liquid and have my juice or another strong-flavored drink near. I tip my head back and practically pour it down my throat. I chase it with the other drink. Minimal tastebud touching for the win!

  • Scott says:

I’ve heard that it’s best to take kratom with fruit juices. Is that true? I tend to just toss and wash with water since the taste doesn’t bother me as much.

  • Jeremy says:

My fiancee normally takes about 10 caps of red Bali before bed for relaxation and discomfort relief. She has expressed interest in powder, so what is the approximate powder equivalent intake to achieve the same result?

    • Jasmin Weber says:

Hey there, because we aren’t medical professionals please understand this is not medical advice, merely our best understanding of the subject- if she’s using our brand of kratom capsules, she’s taking 5 grams total before bed. Each cap is equal to half a gram, so 10 caps= 5 grams. A teaspoon of kratom holds roughly 2-3 grams, so two teaspoons would probably be around the same amount, perhaps a bit less to stay on the safe side. We hope this info helps, and don’t forget to check out our blog section where we have articles on dosing & other kratom topics!

  • Zach says:

I’m a huge fan of tea so I love to steep my kratom. I really enjoy sipping it slowly and having the effects set in gradually. I’m thinking about adding it to my fruit smoothies next.

  • John says:

I haven’t tried kratom yet but something tells me I’ll go with the capsules. I’ve heard the powder is really bitter and I’m not sure I’m ready to mix it with my food just yet.

  • Johnny says:

How much kratom would you suggest I use if I’m adding to food? Should I use more or less than the amount I take when using capsules? I’m thinking the food may dull the effects but I’m not sure.
