A lot of people are talking about kratom. Many people use it for relaxation or energy, and it’s become popular for a pre-workout boost. What we can see from that is kratom is an extremely versatile plant. Also, it may have the potential to be helpful for relieving discomfort. Kratom is a one-of-a-kind plant that comes with an abundance of benefits, but like everything, it also has disadvantages. It’s good to know what side effects kratom may or may not cause, so read on to learn more!
Kratom is popular because of the advantages it offers due to its high alkaloid content. For many people, this is largely why they find kratom enjoyable, but for others, the situation is a bit different.
In general, alkaloids have a strong impact on our bodies and our overall well being. Because they are so strong, kratom alkaloids may be difficult for some to tolerate.
Because of the high amount of alkaloids, kratom can cause some unpleasant side effects, although this is very rare. Problems generally occur in people who abuse kratom, for example taking too much kratom too quickly or using it often in combination with drugs and/or alcohol.

The dose you ingest is perhaps the most important thing you should pay attention to when taking kratom. At very low doses (usually between 2-6 g), kratom tends to have a mildly stimulating effect. This manifests in the form of increased alertness and sociability, an overall pleasant mood, and higher levels of energy. Lower doses are rarely a cause of problems – you should be alright if you take doses at this range. Of course, the effects of kratom vary from person to person, so you should consult a medical expert if you have any questions.
Slightly higher doses of kratom ranging from 6-15 g will naturally cause a more noticeable effect, but they’re still generally safe to take. At these higher doses, kratom usually acts as a mild discomfort-reliever and it may cause drowsiness and sleepiness, depending on the strain. Again, kratom doses can have different effects for different people.
Very high doses of kratom (>15g) may cause problems for some people. This is when kratom can have very sedating effects. Of course, some people might find this dose enjoyable. For many, taking overly-large doses of kratom is an unpleasant experience, so they stick to the lower end of the range.
Other Rare Kratom Side Effects
You can take kratom in larger doses and not experience side effects – it all depends on your body and tolerance. Still, it’s important to know side effects that may occur if you take too much kratom.
- Loss of appetite – kratom has a unique taste and is strong on the stomach, which is why we suggest eating something before taking it. For some, using kratom has led to a loss of appetite, which could eventually lead to weight loss, although this is quite rare. Take care of your eating patterns and try to eat as healthy as you can, no matter if you’re taking kratom or not.
- Disturbed sleep – depending on the vein, kratom might cause some problems with sleep. For example, taking a vein that’s popular for energizing and uplifting properties at night. If you intend to take kratom to help you with your sleep, stick to red veins and take them at night. If you prefer feeling positive and dynamic throughout your day, then choose green or white veins.
- Dehydration or constipation – typically seen in kratom users who have been taking kratom for a longer time. To enjoy kratom & stay hydrated at the same time, we recommend brewing yourself a warm cup of kratom tea! Check out our step-by-step instructions on how to make kratom tea here.
- Nausea – the reason we recommend taking kratom after eating is without food in your stomach, kratom might cause feelings of nausea. It’s kind of like drinking several cups of strong tea on an empty stomach, which can also cause nausea.
Kratom can certainly cause some issues if you don’t take it safely, appropriately, and in controlled doses. That is why we suggest speaking with a medical professional to find out if kratom is right for you. If you notice any side effects while taking kratom, minimize your dose, unless side effects are severe, in which case discontinue use. It’s perfectly normal if kratom just isn’t right for you, and at the end of the day, your health and well-being are the only things that matter.
