A 2021 Study published by the Research Gate, Adverse Health Effects of Kratom: An Analysis of Social Media Data conducted a comprehensive social media analysis of side effects reported by Kratom users. Another study conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Center also explored in-depth the adverse side effects of Kratom. The findings of this Research were in-line and in agreement with the previous studies. 

Results revealed that negative side effects were quite rare and largely dose-dependent. The analysis also highlighted that less than 1% of users sought professional medical or mental help related to Kratom consumption.

The study further confirmed that the risk of adverse side effects (including dehydration) increased with higher Kratom doses.

Dosages of at least 5 g and frequency of about 22 times per week were more likely to cause unwanted side effects (reported by around 20% of the 3024 participants). These side effects were majorly gastrointestinal, such as constipation and nausea.

Other commonly reported side effects were dehydration, excessive thirst, vomiting, headache, watery eyes, weight loss, and insomnia.

A significant number of Kratom users also reported that the plant enhanced their health and boosted the immune system in ways they deemed unachievable (and with lesser side effects) than other medicines or pharmaceuticals.

Overall, the study concluded that Kratom consumption is essentially low-risk for the majority of people.
